Treasure worth keeping

In every Methodist Church there are documents and papers which are worth keeping for future generations. They won’t help you pay the assessment but they deserve to be treasured because they tell the story of your church’s journey of faith over the years.

You may think that nobody will be interested in the pulpit notice book once it is full, or the Sunday School register, or last month’s church magazine. And people 50 or 100 years ago didn’t think so either. So they tucked them at the back of the vestry cupboard or put them in a box in the manse loft.

But records like these are fascinating and can sometimes be really important. So they must be kept safe.

Here are some examples of the things we should be saving and taking care of:

Account books                                                    Newsletters

Baptism and Burial Registers                          Pew Rent Records

Church histories                                                Photographs

Church magazines                                            Programmes & Handbills

Circuit Preaching Plans                                    Pulpit Notice Books

Letters                                                                 Sunday School Registers

Minute books                                                     Trust Documents

Membership Rolls                                             Weekly Orders of Service

Membership Tickets                                         Weekly Notice Sheets

Once it is no longer needed for current use any material of this kind should be placed in safe keeping with a local Record Office.

Here is a guide to the places where each circuit should be depositing their records:
